What makes Kindred Hykeham unique?

Kindred Hykeham is designed to inspire curiosity, independence and a love of learning through exceptional indoor and outdoor experiences.

Our expansive outdoor area is almost as large as our indoor space, giving children plenty of room to explore, discover and play. With free-flow access throughout the day, children can move seamlessly between indoors and outdoors, following their interests and learning in ways that suit them best.

The garden is full of exciting opportunities for adventure and exploration, featuring climbing equipment, bikes, an allotment and fruit trees where children can grow their own vegetables and learn about nature firsthand. A large canopy stretches across the garden, allowing outdoor play in all weather conditions, while artificial grass ensures the space remains safe, accessible and enjoyable all year round.

For our youngest children, we offer a completely separate baby room in its own dedicated building, creating a calm and nurturing environment tailored to their developmental needs. Babies also enjoy their own private garden, providing a safe and secure outdoor space where they can explore and grow at their own pace.

While we are a large nursery with extensive facilities, we pride ourselves on maintaining a warm, family-focused atmosphere.

Parent Reviews

  • Since my child has started attending Kindred they have come on leaps and bounds. The learning facilities are incredible and transmissible... It is very evident that the staff are passionate about their jobs.
Every time I pick my child up or drop them off, they are greated with warm smiles or I am provided with a detailed handover about their day.
Throughout the day there are updates provided on the app too, something I can show my child's grandparents when we visit. My child is always excited to attend nursery and looks forward to it every day - this speaks volumes about the environment which they are in. I'm always at ease knowing they are safe and being inspired to achieve their potential. The management team have been incredibly supportive and they are approachable, friendly and understanding. i've recommended this nursery to other parents and will continue to do so.

  • "My son attends 2 days a week and was fully welcomed. He is quite shy and timid and they have worked really well supporting him in the setting. They do a range of activities throughout the days, updating what they have been doing. As parents, we are updated which is fab, as well as specific observations to my child on how they are getting on.
The food is amazing, the variety they get is fantastic and my son always eats it plus seconds, so he is never hungry. They get the opportunity to go outside as well as supporting getting them school ready. We have recently had a parents evening, which i wasn't expecting, with my sons key worker being very prepared, speaking about strengths and areas where we can support at home. He is treated as an individual, not just another student."

  • "Our daughter really enjoys going to the nursery, she smiles and waves at the nursery workers on arrival. The staff clearly work hard to form bonds with each child. The variety of activities is great within a consistent daily routine that helps her settle. The staff are always friendly and willing to chat regarding how she is getting on."

  • "An excellent nursery! My daughter 2 years old loves going and is so happy when I pick her up. I enjoy taking her and picking her up inside the room she stays in. It's lovely to hear what she has been up to in her session that day. They do so many activities with them, singing dancing and lots of free play too. The food they get is amazing and I believe it has taught her to experience new tastes and to eat well with the other children. The staff are lovely and the app is great to see photos of what they have been up to. It also tells you what they have eaten and how much! Overall Kindred Hykeham is a great place!"

Kindred Hykeham Nursery and Pre-School FAQs

How do settling in sessions work?

We take a warm, flexible and child-centred approach to settling in, ensuring that every child feels safe, secure and ready to begin their nursery journey with confidence.

Four Weeks Before Start Date: We begin the settling-in process approximately four weeks before your child's start date. The first session is a one-hour welcome meeting where parents or carers stay with their child. During this time, we complete our 'All About Me' book together, helping us learn about your child's routines, interests, likes and dislikes, as well as any additional support they may need.

Follow-Up Sessions: We then schedule at least three additional settling-in sessions for your child to attend independently. These sessions gradually increase in length, typically starting at around 1.5 hours and building up to 3 hours, allowing your child to become familiar with their new environment, key person and daily routines at a comfortable pace.

Experiencing Mealtimes: As part of the settling-in process, children will usually experience either lunch or tea with us, helping them become confident with nursery mealtimes before they begin their full sessions.

A Personalised Approach: Every child settles differently, and we tailor our approach to meet their individual needs. If your child requires additional time or support to feel comfortable, we are always happy to arrange extra settling-in sessions to ensure they have the best possible start with us.

What is the unique feel or ethos of your nursery team?

Our nursery has the benefits of a large setting with the warmth and familiarity of a close-knit family environment. We are proud of our strong reputation within the local community and the long-lasting relationships we build with our families.

Our long standing experienced team takes the time to get to know not only each child, but their parents and carers too. We understand that every family is unique, and we work closely together to ensure children feel happy, secure and supported from the very beginning.

Many families tell us that our nursery feels like an extension of home rather than a traditional nursery. Although we have a large team and extensive facilities, every child is truly known as an individual. We celebrate each child's personality, interests and achievements, creating a nurturing environment where children feel valued, confident and able to thrive.

What links do you have with local schools to prepare my child for the next step?

We have strong relationships with local schools and work closely with them to support a smooth transition to Reception. Once school places are confirmed, we arrange transition meetings and share information with schools.

Reception teachers regularly visit the nursery to meet the children, and our on-site SENCO works closely with school SENCOs where needed. Having been part of the community for over 20 years, local schools know our team well and often tell us that children arrive well prepared.

We focus on developing independence and school-readiness skills, including toileting, dressing themselves, recognising their name, eating with a knife and fork, drinking from an open cup and managing their belongings. Our priority is ensuring children are confident, independent and ready to learn.

Most local schools also offer transition visits before September, giving children the opportunity to meet their teacher and become familiar with their new environment.

How do you build relationships with parents?

We use the Satchel app to keep parents updated throughout the day, sharing information about their child's activities, meals, sleep and learning experiences. Regular updates help families stay connected and reassured while their child is at nursery.

We also enjoy bringing families together through special events throughout the year, including our Nativity performances and summer graduation celebrations for children moving on to school.

How often do the children play outside?

Children have free-flow access to the outdoor area for much of the day, allowing them to choose whether to play and learn indoors or outdoors. We encourage outdoor play in all weather conditions and make the most of our outdoor spaces whenever possible.

On days when the weather is particularly poor, children still go outside at least twice a day to enjoy fresh air and active play.
