What makes Kindred Wheathampstead unique?

At Kindred Wheathampstead, we believe in the power of outdoor play. Our large, garden is designed for adventure, featuring a mud kitchen, sandpits, balance equipment and open-ended resources like crates and tyres. We encourage every child to embrace daily outdoor exploration and learning.
We are fortunate to be surrounded by nature, with horse fields and a river close by. This allows us to take peaceful walks and give children the chance to discover their local environment. These regular trips into the community, whether to nature spots or local amenities, help children build their confidence and a sense of connection to the world around them.
We are dedicated to building strong home-nursery links, especially when it comes to development. We create special learning bags packed with activities that mirror what your child is experiencing at nursery strengthening their exposure to key topics and allowing you to share in their educational journey.

Meet Our Kindred Wheathampstead Nursery Staff
Jodie Phin
Nursery Manager
Hello, my name is Jodie.
I started my journey in childcare at Wheathampstead as an unqualified practitioner in 2020 and have since completed my Level 3 Early Years qualification resulting in me becoming the Room Leader of pre-school. In September 2023 I became Deputy Manager and as of April 2024 Manager.
I am passionate about SEND and enjoy supporting the staff with ways to elevate the children's learning and development. In 2022 I became the Senco for the nursery and have implemented new methods and support within the setting. I put my all into getting the correct support for children with SEND, having great communication and partnerships with the parents.
I love watching children grow and develop and knowing that I have been part of their journey feels very rewarding.
Amy Matthews
Deputy Nursery Manager
Hello, my name is Amy.
I have been working in Childcare since I finished college at age 18.
I have recently worked in a Nursery for 16 years before moving to Kindred Wheathampstead in December 2022. I started as Room Manager in the Baby room before being promoted to Deputy Manager in March 2024. I am really enjoying learning new skills and having more responsibilities within the Nursery. I have worked with children aged from 3 months to 5 years but my passion is definitely working with babies as I find that they are all individuals and it’s amazing watching them develop as they grow up.
In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family and friends especially my seven year old nephew, he loves football just as much as I do. I am looking forward to many more years here at Kindred Wheathampstead, extending my knowledge in my Childcare career.

What are the designated parking and access arrangements for drop-off and pick-up?
We offer convenient and secure access with a private car park exclusively available for our families. This dedicated parking area ensures a smooth and safe experience during drop-off and pick-up times.
What is the unique ethos and philosophy of your nursery team?
Our nursery team is defined by a nurturing, family-feel environment. Our staff are deeply passionate about working in early years and exemplify a selfless commitment to always putting the children first. We foster a team culture built on a genuine love for education and a drive to create the best possible experience for every child.
How do your settling in sessions work?
We offer a flexible and supportive settling-in process designed to ensure a confident transition. Typically, we arrange three sessions, with the structure being tailored to the needs of your individual child and family:
Session: A short session where you stay with your child to meet the key person and share fill out the “All About Me” booklet.
Session 2: An hour-long session where the child is dropped off to practice separation and start bonding independently.
Session 3: A longer session to allow the child to experience more of the nursery routine.
We are always prepared to offer additional sessions if your child requires more time to feel secure and happy before their official start date.
Do you have links with any local family hubs, charities, or support groups?
We actively participate in community events throughout the year, including collaborating with Wheathampstead Council to participate in annual parades and fundraising efforts. We are also proud participants in the popular village events, such as the festive Christmas light-up event, ensuring our children and families are well-connected to local life.
What are your staff-to-child ratios at the nursery?
We are committed to providing the highest standard of care and attention for every child, with safety as our top priority. Our staff-to-child ratios strictly adhere to and, in some cases, exceed UK regulations to ensure a secure, nurturing, and engaging environment.
Our regulated ratios are as follows:
Babies (Under 2 years): 1 staff member to every 3 children (1:3)
Toddlers (2-3 years): 1 staff member to every 5 children (1:5)
Preschoolers (3-4 years): 1 staff member to every 8 children (1:8)
By maintaining these ratios, we guarantee that each child receives the individual support, supervision, and guidance they need to thrive in a safe and monitored setting.
