From Apprentice to Head of Early Years: My Journey in Childcare by Georgina Brook

At Kindred Nurseries, we know that every childcare professional has a unique journey that shapes their passion and expertise. Georgina, our Head of Early Years & Childcare, has spent nearly two decades in the sector, rising from an Apprentice to a senior leadership role. In this blog post, she shares her inspiring career story, highlighting the opportunities, challenges, and key moments that led her to where she is today. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to advance in early years education, Georgina’s journey is a testament to the rewarding and dynamic nature of a career in childcare.

A Career That Started with Passion

My early years journey began back in 2005 when I started at my local nursery as an Apprentice. As a practical learner, it suited me to be gaining knowledge alongside being able to put what I was learning into practice, being at the setting each day. I believe this played a big part in my career progression and cementing what I was learning.

After completing my Level 2 and with my newfound knowledge, qualification, and confidence, I applied for a permanent Qualified Practitioner role, which I was successful in getting. This sparked something in me—wanting to further my learning—so I began completing my Level 3.

Growth Through Learning and Support

Through receiving support from Management and my colleagues, through coaching, role modelling, asking questions, in-house training, and getting experience with all ages, I grew from strength to strength. Whenever an opportunity arose, I went for it. Taking on key children, further training to be DSL, SEND, First Aid trained, a 1:1 for a number of children with SEN, learning Makaton, and becoming an Induction Champion supporting new employees, I built the foundations to become a strong Room Leader.

Being part of a group of nurseries enabled me to progress even further. Undertaking Leadership and Management training and growing into other roles, I was able to transfer to other nurseries within the company, where I quickly climbed the ladder to a Senior, Deputy Manager, and Nursery Manager. I remember the CEO at the time saying, “You will be going for my job next!” as I had been to see her for so many interviews.

Embracing New Challenges and Opportunities

Continuing to thrive and being recognised for great results—turning nurseries around to high occupancy, exceeding budgets, and having great reputations—I was called on to support new Managers and settings in need of support with Ofsted inspections. This evolved into a Field Manager role, taking on even more responsibility and supporting a number of nurseries being acquired into the company.

As the company I worked for was then acquired and I had been there for over 12 years, I saw it as an opportunity for a change. I went to lead on opening and setting up an independent nursery alongside the owner, where this was built up to be full, expanding our current numbers, and needing to add a cabin in the garden due to the demand for places, with the nursery going on to achieve an Outstanding Ofsted.

Finding My Home at Kindred Nurseries

From this, I came across Kindred Nurseries and instantly loved their ethos, so I applied for an Area Manager role covering a cluster of settings across the country. I felt it was the next step after gaining so much experience over the years and feeling I was making a positive difference for staff, children, and families both operationally and through the quality of teaching, learning, and environments. Supporting managers to make real successes of their nurseries and supporting newly acquired nurseries, integrating them into Kindred, and as a company, winning many awards.

After three years in this role and with the company growing, I am now set for my newest challenge as Head of Early Years & Childcare, where I will continue to support, inspire, and be proud to be part of the Kindred family, spreading awe and wonder to all our staff, children, and families.
